The Five-Step Review Process
Every Trusted Pest Reviews review follows the same five-step process. We document this publicly so you can see exactly how our rankings are produced — and so we hold ourselves accountable.
Category Selection
We choose product categories based on what homeowners actually search for and ask about when dealing with pests. We don't write reviews for categories where we can't get hands-on testing data, and we don't accept brand-suggested topics.
Shortlisting
We identify the top 8–15 candidate products in each category using:
- Verified buyer reviews from major retailers (minimum 100 reviews per product)
- Entomologist recommendations and peer-reviewed pest management literature where applicable
- Independent third-party safety data (EPA registrations, FIFRA compliance records where relevant)
- Editor and expert panel input from our in-house and contracted pest management professionals
From this list, we narrow to the final 5–7 products that will be tested.
Hands-On Testing
We purchase or receive review samples of every product (always disclosed). Our testing panel — 30+ partner households across the US, plus our in-house team — uses each product over a defined period (typically 4–12 weeks depending on category and pest pressure season).
For chemical categories like sprayers, baits, and bait stations, our entomologist advisors review testing protocols before we begin to ensure accurate and safe evaluation conditions.
Data Synthesis & Scoring
We score every product against the same criteria using a standardized scoring rubric (see below). Scores are computed before rankings are assembled — we don't decide a "winner" first and reverse-engineer the score.
Editorial Review & Publication
Every review is reviewed by our Lead Pest Control Editor and (for pesticide and chemical categories) our Board-Certified Entomologist before publication. Reviews are then updated monthly, or sooner if significant new data emerges (product reformulations, EPA actions, formula changes, price shifts).
Our Scoring Criteria
Each product receives an overall score out of 10, calculated from weighted sub-scores. Weights are set per category — for example, "kill rate and residual effect" matters more for cockroach baits than for mechanical mouse traps, where "trigger sensitivity and reset speed" carries more weight.
| Criterion | What We Measure | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Pest Control Effectiveness | Does the product demonstrably reduce pest activity in real home conditions over the test period? | 30% |
| Safety & Compliance | EPA registration status, active ingredient risk profile, child and pet exposure risks, handling requirements | 20% |
| Ease of Use | Setup time, application complexity, clarity of instructions, day-to-day operation and maintenance | 20% |
| Build Quality & Durability | Materials, construction, resistance to weather and wear, longevity observed during real-world testing | 15% |
| Value for Money | Cost relative to performance, coverage area, refill or replacement expenses, and protection duration | 15% |
Why This Matters
Most "best of" lists you read online are ranked by affiliate commission rates. Brands that pay higher commissions get listed first. We refuse to do that. Trusted Pest Reviews's rankings are determined exclusively by our scoring rubric, applied identically to every product — paid or unpaid, popular or niche.
What We Don't Do
To keep our reviews trustworthy, there are several things we explicitly don't do:
- We don't accept payment for placement. No brand can pay to be ranked higher.
- We don't write reviews based on press releases. Every review requires hands-on testing in real home environments.
- We don't hide negative findings. If a product fails to control pests, we say so — even if we've previously praised the brand.
- We don't rely on a single data source. Every score combines hands-on field testing, expert entomological review, and verified buyer feedback.
- We don't evaluate pesticide efficacy claims without specialist oversight. Chemical and bait-based rankings are reviewed by a Board-Certified Entomologist or licensed pest management professional.
How We Update Reviews
Pest control products change. Formulations get revised, EPA registrations are updated, new safety data emerges, and brands get acquired. We update every published review on at least a monthly basis, and immediately when:
- A product is recalled or flagged by the EPA or another regulatory body
- An active ingredient list or formulation materially changes
- Significant new efficacy or safety data emerges from peer-reviewed research
- Pricing shifts by more than 20%
Updated reviews always show the most recent revision date at the top of the article.
